Each of the four seasons are clearly distinct, with hot and humid summer weather in Pittsburgh, being followed by a warm fall and chilly winter, when harsh overnight frosts become commonplace.

The distant Atlantic Ocean and high mountains tend to regulate the winter climate and temperatures in Pittsburgh, although snow often makes an appearance at this time of the year. July is the hottest month, when sunny weather results in daytime averages of 28°C / 82°F, rising to 30°C / 86°F on occasion.

Seasonal Climate Variations / When to Go

As a result of its location near to the Allegheny Mountains, Pittsburgh experiences fairly high precipitation levels each money, with an average of 6 cm / 2.4 inches in October and as much as 10 cm / 4 inches in May. Therefore, even if you arrive during the hot summer climate, you will need to pack sensibly, allowing for the odd wet day or afternoon thunderstorm.

Summer tends to be the most popular time to visit Pittsburgh, when the likelihood of fine weather is high. However, whilst many summer days will be dry, they are often quite overcast at times. Spring and fall offer an equally appealing climate and are therefore also good times to pay a visit to Pittsburgh, when daytime temperatures stay around 20°C / 68°F and rainfall levels are at their lowest.
